Ride with Jeremy McGrath at Inaugural Powder Mt. MX Event

Monster Energy backs the first-ever Utah MX event at Powder Mountain Resort, featuring a freshly-cut track designed by McGrath, live music and more!

Jul 29 2009 2:47PM

CORONA, Calif. – Monster Energy announced today that it is backing the first-ever Powder Mountain Motocross event featuring the King of Supercross himself, Monster’s own Jeremy “Showtime” McGrath, competing on a track he personally designed that’s just been cut into the ski runs at Powder Mountain Resort in the picturesque Utah north country.

Running from Aug. 27-30, the Monster Energy Powder Mountain MX features a full range of amateur classes – from Novice to Veteran – Pro and Women’s classes and even UTV classes on Saturday.

Event director Lawrence Lewis, who spends a good deal of time on Powder Mountain Resort’s legendary snow during the winter, is pumped about the opportunity to work with the resort and McGrath to created a world-class motocross track for this event. “Riding the chairlift and looking down at Powder Mountain’s terrain during the winter months I couldn’t help but visualize a motocross track, thinking to myself what’d it take to create a world-class track on the mountain during the summer,” said Lewis. “I got Jeremy fired up about it, then pitched the idea to everyone at Powder Mountain. The end result is going to be an incredible four days of riding, racing and all sorts of other activities that Powder Mountain can offer.”

Dubbed the “Monster Energy Track at Powder Mountain,” McGrath’s vision for the course was initially laid out as he sat on the chairlift next to Lewis. A skier/snowboarder himself, McGrath utilized the radical elevation change wisely, laying out a course that would challenge the pro riders, but was makeable for the Novice and Intermediate racers as well.

“The Monster Energy Track at Powder Mountain pulls together features from places I’ve raced that have a lot of elevation change, like Glen Helen and Mammoth,” said McGrath. “And it’s designed in a green way. We took great care to tread lightly with the heavy equipment and utilized the existing features of the ski runs that were already cut into the mountainside. Come the first snowfall you won’t even know we ran a motocross.”

Open practice for the weekend’s races is Thursday and Friday, ten bucks per rider, with races running Saturday and Sunday. There is no admission for spectators for the practice sessions. Practice on Saturday and Sunday runs from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and racing runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. All races have qualifiers and there will be a heat race and LCQ (Last Chance Qualifier) to cut the field to one 40-man/woman main (if necessary).

Special Monster Energy promotion! Anyone who brings a Monster Energy can will get in free at the gate thanks to Monster Energy’s “Go Green” recycling program. Racers will receive free product courtesy of Monster Energy.

Powder Mountain Hillclimb

Powder Mountain Hillclimb presented by Diamond Peak Mountain Sports

Eden, UT – (Photo Credit: Natalie Best Steed)The first ever Powder Mountain Hillclimb, presented by Diamond Peak Mountain Sports, was held this past weekend in the Ogden Valley. The road bicycle race attracted weekend warriors and elite riders alike. 50 cyclists lined up on SR 158 to tackle one of the toughest bicycle climbs in the west. Chris Hong, a rider for the elite Bob’s Bicycles team, said that this was one of the toughest races he’s ever done. Chris was using this race as aprt of a tune up for the Tour of Utah which runs in August. He finished first in the Men’s Pro/Cat 1/2 division and third overall.

The battle for the fastest time to the top, an almost 6 mile, 3300 ft slog up to Powder Mountain Resort from Wolf Creek Utah, was fast and furious for the best climbers. 15 year old Keegan Swenson of Cole Sport, Nathan Cisney from Rooster’s Brewing Co. and Hong were absolutely railing it up the road. Hong attacked Swenson and was able to gap a bit, but Swenson’s steady tempo proved too much and Hong was eventually overtaken. It was then Swenson and Cisney who battled it out for top honors. In the last grueling mile Cisney wasa bale to pull ahead and finish in a standard setting time of 41 min 20 sec taking the overall and 1st in the Men’s Cat 5 division. Swenson was only 30 seconds back good enough for second overall and 1st in the Men’s Cat 4 class. Hong crossed the finish line 2 min 9 sec back.

Everyone who finished this race can consider themselves winners, says event promoter, Ben Towery of Team Excelerator. He was very pleased with the turnout and the quality of the riders who competed. The weather was absolutely perfect and the difficulty of the ride was countered by the beauty of the Ogden Valley.

A very special thanks goes out to the sponsors of the race: Diamond Peak Mountain Sports, Rooster’s Brewing Co., Peregrine Health, Powder Mountain, Wolf Creek Utah and EBSI Websites.

Trifecta of Shred on April 2 – 4, 2009

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Powder Mountain’s 11th Annual Spring Session presents the Trifecta of Shred on April 2 – 4, 2009. Surfers, skateboarders and snowboarders will compete in three separate competitions with the overall winner reigning as the 2009 Chairman of the Boards.

The ever popular Spring Session is the highlight of the freestyle season with a freestyle terrain and half pipe jam session at the Hidden Lake Terrain Park. The competitors and spectators will be treated to a barbeque and the tunes of Codi Jordan and Funk Shui. Registration is free for anyone with a valid Powder Mountain lift pass. The competition will run from 10am – 3pm with live music starting at 11am. Decade, Vitamin Water, Skull Candy and AMP Alarm are sponsors of the competition.

“The Spring Session is the original slopestyle comp at Powder Mountain and has set the stage for all other events at the resort,” said Dave Jessup, Terrain Parks Manager. “The Hidden Lake Park has continually evolved this year with new rails, jumps and walls. If you haven’t made it to the park lately, you will be surprised.”

It is a natural progression to include surfing and skateboarding into the competitive mix since interest in these sports resulted in the creation of the winter version of freestyle. The Trifecta of Shred gives snowboarders an opportunity to show their respect to their ancestral roots.

The event kicks off on Thursday with an indoor skateboarding competition at Crossroads Skate Park. On Friday, the competitors move to Flowrider for the surfing contest. The event will culminate on Saturday with the Spring Session at Powder Mountain. Athletes may compete in only one or two events, but must enter all three to be crowned Chairman of the Boards.
