07/08 Employee Party

The last fling for the 07/08 season was the Employee Party on Saturday, April 19. Around 300 employees and their families shredded one last time at Hidden Lake, joined in games and feasted at a massive barbeque. To honor the front line staff, management manned Hidden Lake lift, ran games, served food and gave out goodies. No one left empty handed and Wes Goldsberry won the grand prize - a new set of Solomon skis!

Congratulations to Richard Wood, i.e. Woody. He is the first recipient of the James Peak Lifetime Achievement Award. For many years, Woody has worn two hats at Powder Mountain - Manager of Night Operations and Manager of the Shuttle Department. Woody started at Powder Mountain in 1982, around the time that Powder Country began operation. His bus quickly became known as the "only four wheel drive lift" in the country and many know Powder Country as "Woody World". In the height of the season, Powder Country shuttles often transport 1,000 to 2,000 riders a day. The Powder Mountain fleet of 5 buses and 2 vans run regular pick ups at Eden lodging properties and are often chartered by groups staying in Ogden or Layton. No matter the weather conditions you feel safe with Woody at the wheel!

Unfortunately, everyone was having too much fun to take many photos, but here are just a few of the recipients of 07/08 employee awards.

Thanks to our great prize sponsors: Solomon, Descente, Scott, Diamond Peaks Ski Shop, Hampton Inn Layton, Alpine Pizza and Canyon Sports.

Backcountry Rendevous Gear Test

Backcountry and Outside Magazines joined forces for first ever Backcountry Rendezvous at Powder Mountain, Utah on March 24-30. The results of the biggest backcountry gear test ever will be published in September.

Valley Lodging at Wolf Creek and the Ogden/Weber Convention & Visitors Bureau assisted in attracting the publications to Powder Mountain. By staging the tests at Powder Mountain, Backcountry was able to bring in its entire editorial staff and seasoned testers from across the nation.

Outside Magazine, dedicated to the active lifestyle since 1978, is joining the Backcountry test for one reason: authenticity. "I'm really excited to team up with Backcountry Magazine this season," says Sam Moulton, editor of Outside Magazine's Buyer's Guides. "It's better for everybody. Manufacturers only have to mount up and send one fleet of skis, boots, and bindings. But the biggest benefit will be the end product. By joining forces, and sharing testers, data, and our respective expertise, each magazine will be able to provide our readers what they want-more in-depth and authoritative reviews."

"What makes us special," says Powder Mountain Director of Public Relations Carolyn Daniels, "is an additional 2,700 acres of powder served only by shuttle, snowcat, or skins." Testers should find prime testing conditions-Powder's already seen 347 inches of snow fall through Valentines Day. "Our reputation is for untracked pow," says Daniels, "and our loyal fans are the same people who read Backcountry and Outside. What a perfect match."

Hopes are that the Backcountry Rendezvous will return to Pow Mow next season.

Spring Session Pictures

A Powder Mountain tradition! This event is the highlight of the freestyle season. It was a party, pipe jam, rail jam, barbeque, and DJ battle rolled into one. Family fun for all ages and abilities.

This year, we had a good turnout with even a band and ski demos weathering the snow coming down. A big thanks to all that attended as well as 4Frnt Skis for coming out!

Steamboat Powdercats

When developing the new guided snowcat excursion this season, Rod Kelly turned to the website of the well established Steamboat Powdercats. The company operates on 10,000 acres of permitted snowcat terrain on Buffalo Pass and has an excellent reputation in the industry.

Rod Kelly, Powder's Operations Manager was stunned when Kent Vertrees, Master of Chaos for Steamboat Powdercats, called to arrange a year-end party for the staff of 14!

On the first day, the group of powerful skiers and enthusiast chanters explored the resort from top to bottom. They started the day with Lightning Ridge snowcat and ended out of bounds on the Powder Snowcat Safari. In between, they searched for freshies off every lift, in Cobabe Canyon and in Powder Country. At the end of the day, they adjourned to the Powder Keg to share tales pow and to reward their guides, Phil and Steve.

Thanks for choosing Powder Mountain!
